A poetic look at the career of Arnold Palmer
Golf's greatest Patriarch
In the late 1950’s the game of golf began to change
By a man who said Arnold Palmer is my name.
His greatest teacher was his Dad
Whose lessons, though strict, were never a fad
When he first met his soul mate it turned on a light
Without question it was love at first sight.
He asked her to marry the very first week
The engagement was sealed with a kiss to the cheek
A trailer they pulled to each golf event
It wasn't much but it was better than rent
With many successes a plane he did buy
And ever since has flown through the sky
Arnold's game produced low scores
And his popularity began to soar
Arnie's army became the name
Of the fans who love the man and the game
With every shot he displayed total energy
Which gave the game incredible synergy
His mannerisms were very unique
From hitching his pants to putting with locked knees.
His performance was solid throughout the 1950's
But things really took off in 1960
Come from behind victories in the Masters and Open proved large
It was the beginning of the famous Palmer charge
For the fans rebirth came with each win
To finish any less would be like a sin
But with all the victories there were some defeats
Which left the fans crying in their seats
He took a game that few understood
And showed the world it was very good
Whenever he speaks it is from the heart
Which is viewed by many as the very best part
His rilvarly with Jack Nicklaus was not pretend
But most importantly they are best of friends
To the younger players he has been a great mentor
Inspiring many to careers of splendor
After many years he is active as ever
On the answer of retirement the answer appears to be never
The world is now a better place
Because Mr. Palmer, the King, has show such grace
